The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Blood Drive is happening today at the Indiana Mall, and local Red cross officials say it’s as important as ever this year because of a critical shortage of blood supplies across the region. Bad winter weather has forced the cancellation of numerous blood collection events, so it’s hoped that today’s effort will help restock hospitals across the area, including in Indiana.
The Red Cross’ Karen Sistak says the “Indiana Day of Giving” needs healthy blood donors to show up today at the mall from 9 AM to 7 PM. That means that if you have a cold or are taking certain medications, as important as it is to collect blood, please stay home. You can check www.redcross.org to find out if you are qualified to give blood.
The tough winter weather we’ve been experiencing has forced a number of cancellations, and at a time when the need is increasing. About 150 events have been cancelled and the region is down 5,500 units since January 1st.
Walk-ins are welcome today, or you may reserve a space at redcross.org.
Also on this “day of service”, volunteers with Americorps are going to run a food drive at the Indiana Giant Eagle from 9-3. Volunteers will be on hand to collect non-perishable food items and financial donations to benefit ICCAP’s food bank.
