Jury selection for the murder trial of 32-year-old Ray Shetler Jr. is scheduled to begin on February 5th, and after six previous delays, it looks like this time it may actually happen.
Westmoreland County Judge Meagan Bilik-DeFazio has set January 25th as the date by which all pretrial motions must be filed, and scheduled a hearing on those motions for January 29th.
Shetler is charged with gunning down Saint Clair Township police officer Lloyd Reed Jr. in November of 2015 at the New Florence home of Shetler’s girlfriend, Kristen Luther. Officer Reed had responded to a reported domestic dispute and exchanged gunfire with Shetler when he emerged from the home with a rifle in hand.
Shetler is charged with criminal homicide, first degree murder, and third degree murder. He’s also charged with theft and receiving stolen property for stealing a pickup truck in his escape attempt after the shooting, and with terroristic threats, simple assault, and harassment for the incident with his girlfriend. Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck will ask for the death penalty.
