An Associated Press story published late yesterday says State House Majority Leader Dave Reed says he is considering running for the 9th Congressional District seat to replace Congressman Bill Shuster. The AP does not offer any other details, other than that Reed says he will make up his mind soon.
Shuster announced last week that he will not seek re-election, vacating a seat held by either him or his father for more than four decades. Reed told Indiana In the Morning last week that his phone might be ringing but at that point he had not started answering it. Now, he apparently is mulling over a possible run. He was first elected to the state House in 2003. The 39-year-old has been Majority Leader for the last three years, and if he should run for Congress, he would have to step aside from the 62nd District seat in Harrisburg, since that campaign would be run simultaneously with the congressional race.
State Senator John Eichelberger of Blair County has announced that he will seek the 9th District seat. Art Halvorson and Travis Schooley, who have challenged and been defeated by Shuster in past campaigns, have also announced that they will enter the Republican Primary.
