With snow melting over the last 24 hours, and rain expected today, there may be the chance of localized flooding, and some organizations want you to be careful if you do have to deal with flood water.
The entire county is under a flood watch through Saturday afternoon, and the north-western part of the county is under a flood warning until 8:30 this morning, that according to the national weather service. Unusually warm temperatures in our region have brought about the snow melt, and that is putting a lot of water into creeks and streams. The national weather service defines a flood watch as a flood or flash flood is possible, while a warning means that a flood or flash flood is already occurring or will soon. The Red Cross encourages you to have an emergency preparedness kit in your home at the ready. That kit should include a flashlight, first aid kit, medicines, and important documents that you would need in case you have to evacuate. If you find yourself stuck in a flooded home, the Red Cross says that you should turn off power and not use any electrical or gas-powered appliances that have been flooded and boil tap water until you hear that the water is safe to use.
Also, PennDOT reminds everyone not to take any chances if they see the road in front of them is flooded. If you see such an area, “Turn around, Don’t Drown”.
The conditions will shift from rainy to snowy tonight into tomorrow, so drivers should also be cognizant of the snowy conditions on area roads, and may want to increase following distance on the roads when the snow falls, and be careful for roads that may look wet but are actually black ice.
