Potential candidates for Congressman Bill Shuster’s 9th District seat continue to jockey for position as the first benchmark of the campaign season approaches. February 13th is the first date on which candidates can begin circulating nominating petitions. Shuster is not running for re-election.
Three candidates have announced they will run. Past candidates Art Halvorson and Travis Schooley will take another shot at the seat. Newcomer Benjamin Dayton Hornberger, who at 23 is not legally of age to take a seat in Congress, has also announced he will run, depending on a Constitutional exception which allows Congress to accept a member under the age of 25 if it chooses.
One name mentioned by the website PoliticsPA is that of State House Majority Leader Dave Reed. However, on Indiana In the Morning on WCCS last week, Reed did not sound too interested, saying he’s sure a good candidate will step forward in the 9th District, but “…my phone may be ringing, but I’m not answering.”
Altoona dermatologist Dr. John Joyce says he will run. State Senators John Eichelberger and Pat Stefano are considering it. Senator Richard Alloway says he prefers Harrisburg to Washington.
Only one Democrat has announced a run for the seat. Psychologist Adam Sedlock has said he will be a candidate again after having lost in previous runs.
The Primary election will be on May 15th.
