Two people were rescued and everyone else was evacuated safely as the apartments above Fox’s Pizza Den in Blairsville caught fire this morning.
Fire crews were called to the scene shortly before 5:00 AM with Blairsville, Blacklick, Coral-Graceton, Homer City and Indiana fire departments initially called out for manpower with many other departments called in to provide tanker assists. Jim Meighan, the safety officer from Blairsville Fire Department, said the tankers were needed as Blairsville’s water supply was short. A water main rupture caused the dip in the supplies and the Blairsville fire department asked surrounding areas to have their tankers ready in case they were needed. Those tankers were deployed this morning.
Two people had to be rescued as they were dangling from one of the apartment windows. Blairsville firefighters Jonathan Santoro and Zach Dixon were one of the first on the scene and Dixon said there were no flames sticking out the windows, but there was a lot of fire inside when they rescued the two. Santoro added that they felt they were in the right place at the right time.
Offiicals said the fire started on the second floor. While the fire is out, the building is a complete loss as the second floor apartments were gutted and Fox’s Pizza and the law offices of Leonard and Leonard were destroyed from smoke and water damage. The fire did not spread to any other buildings. The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
