Sunday’s Sports Roundup includes college basketball, high school wrestling, and looks at both the Penguins, who face Boston, and the Steelers, who have a bye this week.
The IUP basketball teams swept a doubleheader from Mercyhurst Saturday at the KCAC. The women handed coach Tom McConnell his 100th IUP win, easily outpacing the Lakers, 89-38. The men held off the Lakers in their game, 67-57.
Also in college basketball, Pitt lost its third straight ACC game, 81-67 to Virginia Tech.
At the 13th Annual Harry “Bo” Wood Wrestling Tournament at Indiana High School Saturday, Indiana High placed 5th. Thomas Jefferson won the team title. Indiana’s Alex Donahue won two matches to win first place in the 195-pound weight division. Marion Center’s Tyler Martin won three matches to take first place at 126 pounds.
The Boston Bruins are in Pittsburgh to face the Penguins this evening. The Pens are 21-19-3 following Friday’s 4-0 sweep of the New York Islanders. The Pens cruised to that victory with two goals by Daniel Sprong, one goal by Evgeni Malkin, a goal and three assists by Sidney Crosby, and 31 saves by Tristan Jarry. Meanwhile, the Bruins are fresh off a 7-1 victory over Carolina Saturday.
You can hear the Pens beginning at 6:30 with the pregame show on U92.5 FM.
The Steelers will watch today’s Jacksonville/Buffalo playoff game with interest. If Jacksonville wins, Pittsburgh will play them next week in the AFC Divisional Round. If the Bills win, the Steelers will play Tennessee, an upset winner Saturday at Kansas City. The Falcons upset the Rams to win Saturday’s NFC game. Carolina plays at New Orleans today in the other NFC game.
