In a move that shocked political insiders, Representative Bill Shuster announced yesterday that he will not seek re-election in the 9th Congressional District, which includes Indiana County. Not as shocking…within hours of Shuster’s announcement, Art Halvorson announced that he will seek the seat. He challenged Shuster in both 2014 and 2016.
Halvorson will have company in the Republican Primary. Adam Sedlock, a psychologist from Fayette County, announced his candidacy in November. Three State Senators, John Eichelberger Jr., Rich Alloway, and Pat Stefano, have been named as possible contenders. Eichelberger ran for the seat when Bill Shuster’s father, Bud, resigned in 2001.
No Democrats have announced their candidacy yet.
Bud and Bill Shuster have held the seat for the last 45 years. Bill Shuster is 56 years old, and says he will leave with “a happy heart” after putting in a final year fighting to push a new infrastructure bill through the Congress. His seat was considered safe if he would have sought re-election.
