The Sunday Sports Roundup includes Crimson Hawks football and basketball, high school basketball tournament results, and Saturday’s Penguins loss to Toronto.
IUP’s football season came to an end in the national semifinals Saturday. The Crimson Hawks fell behind 24-0 and could not complete a comeback, losing to West Florida, 27-17.
The IUP basketball teams fared better. The women beat Mansfield, 74-48 as Megan Smith scored 29 points, including her 1,000th career point. Playing without injured guard Dante Lombardi, the men beat Mansfield, 63-52 as Anthony Glover scored 23.
Boys and girls teams played at the high school basketball tournaments Saturday. In girls’ play, Homer Center beat Meyersdale 57-30, Blairsville trounced Hollidaysburg 75-45, Indiana fell to Latrobe 63-34, Armstrong defeated West Shamokin 36-31, Westmont Hilltop clipped Marion Center 49-45, Bishop Carroll beat Penns Manor 53-45, and it was Bedford over United 49-33.
In boys’ action, Indiana downed Hollidaysburg 55-46, Purchase Line topped Karns City 79-60, Saltsburg was an overtime winner over Winchester Thurston 42-35, West Shamokin handled Redbank Valley 64-40, Homer Center fell to Shade 78-59, and Penns Manor was beaten by Penn Cambria 53-41.
The Penguins spotted Toronto a 3-0 lead in the first period and could not come back, falling 4-3 to the Maple Leafs on home ice. The Pens tried to fight their way out of the early Toronto lead with goals by Riley Sheahan, Evgeni Malkin, and later Sidney Crosby, but came up short. With the loss, the Pens drop to 16-12-3.
