The state yesterday announced more than $20.6 million in grant funding for 106 water cleanup projects across the commonwealth, with some of that money coming to Indiana County.
The funds from the Growing Greener program are split two ways, with 106 projects in 43 counties within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and 55 grants for projects falling outside the watershed. As it happens, Indiana County has projects in both categories.
For Indiana County projects outside the watershed, the Indiana County Conservation District will receive $20,494 for streambank stabilization on the McKee Run in the Creekside area. The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy will be getting $52,193 for Phase two of a restoration project on Ross Run, in the Georgeville area north of Plumville.
In addition, some water in Indiana County will be included in a grant of $7,839 to the Armstrong County Conservation District for water quality testing.
There is also $100,000 for the Western Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation, but no specific area is detailed outlined for that money.
Funding for the Growing Green Program comes from landfill tipping fees paid by waste haulers across the state.
