Indiana Borough Council passed their budget for 2018 at last night’s meeting, but it was not without some criticism from a borough resident.
The budget approved contains a .824 mil tax increase for borough residents, but borough resident Ben Trunzo said he felt many seniors would not be able to afford the tax increase, and some would have to make a choice between paying for food and medicines or paying the increased taxes.
Borough Manager Bradley Gotshall said most of the money from the tax increase would be going towards essential projects for the borough, including flood mitigation projects that were revealed to the borough this summer during the floods.
In other business, it was announced that the one-time short term loan transfer of $500,000 has not been touched yet, but Gotshall anticipates that they will have to use a portion of that $500,000 transfer to meet payroll needs for the month of December. The loan was to cover day-to-day expenses after the borough was saddled with about $240,000 in unanticipated expenses.
Also, longtime Borough Council Member Richard Thorell was honored for his over ten years of service to council. He did not run for re-election.
