In college football, IUP overcame turnovers and a key injury and beat Assumption, 27-22 on Saturday to advance to next week’s Division Two semifinals. Freshman running back Justice Evans ran for 167 yards as IUP piled up 340 yards on the ground and freshman Duane Brown scored the final two touchdowns in the win. Star defensive back Max Redfield was lost in the game with a dislocated hip. IUP will host West Florida on Saturday, with the chance to advance to the national championship game in Kansas City on the line.
In college basketball, the IUP women beat West Chester, 84-75 as Carolyn Appleby scored 25 points and Brittany Robinson 19. Plagued by foul trouble, the IUP men lost to the Rams, 93-78. The Penguins won their fourth straight game, and second in two consecutive nights against the Buffalo Sabres, 5-1. Five Penguins scored, led by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin with a goal and an assist a piece. Phil Kessel, Patric Hornqvist, and Carl Hagelin also scored goals for the Pens.
The Steelers will be in Cincinnati Monday to face the Bengals following last Sunday’s 31-28 win over Green Bay. Steelers coverage will begin with the pregame show at 6:30 on AM 1450 WDAD and FM 100.3.
