UPDATE: Indiana County District Attorney Pat Dougherty announced that the criminal call hearings for Matthew Darby and James Lantz have now been continued. Doughterty believes that the hearings have also been set for January 5th.
WHAT WE FIRST REPORTED
Two people charged with criminal homicide in two separate cases are due in Indiana County Court today for criminal call hearings.
Matthew Darby will have his criminal call hearing today. Darby is charged in Indiana County with raping his ex-girlfriend, an IUP student, in Indiana last February. Darby is also facing charges of homicide in a case out of Allegheny county where he is accused of killing Alin Sheykhet, another ex-girlfriend early on October 8th at her apartment in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. Jury selection on the rape charges will start December 18th.
James Lantz is also set to have a criminal call hearing today. He is charged with killing 23-year-old Derrick Davis in Green Township back in June of this year. The criminal complaint said that Davis’ girlfriend went to Lantz’s home and told him she’d been arguing with Davis and the two went to confront Davis. After the two argued and fought, police say Lantz pulled a sawed-off shotgun from a backpack and shot Davis in the chest. He later told police that he meant to shoot in the air or into the ground to scare Davis, but panicked when Davis came toward him.
Four others charged with homicide were scheduled for criminal call hearings today, but their hearings have already been continued to later dates:
- Proceedings for Justin Stevenson and Nathan Price are charged with killing Timothy Gardner and Jacqueline Brink at their apartment in Cherryhill Township in October of 2016. Stevenson’s hearing will be on January 5th while Price’s hearing has been continued to April 6th
- Matthew McNevin of Rayne Township who is charged with killing Carlos Recalde-Campos and wounding Samantha Riley in late March of this year. His hearing will be held January 5th, but he has a pre-trial conference on Tuesday.
- Charles Cook, who is charged with killing 76-year-old Myrtle McGill in December of 1991. His hearing is also set for January 5th.
