Those bright, sparkling Christmas lights you’ll be enjoying for the next month will cost a bit more for Penelec customers.
Starting tomorrow, the utility’s electricity rates will jump about 8.3 percent, from 5.38 cents per kilowatt hour to 6.74 cents. That will increase the average residential customer’s bill using 750 kilowatt hours per month from $96.97 to $105.04.
Penelec says more demand during the winter heating season is one factor causing the increase, along with a rebounding economy. With more people moving indoors and it getting dark outside earlier, the lights go on sooner, which causes demand to go up and prices to increase.
Penelec adjusts the electricity rates quarterly. The next adjustment will take effect on March 1st.
