Ford Harris Swigart, Jr. 88, of Indiana, passed away Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.
A son of the late Ford Harris and Edna Harter Swigart, Sr., he was born Jan. 30, 1929 in Barberton, OH.
Mr. Swigart was a 1947 graduate of Barberton High School. In 1951, he graduated from Otterbein College. He received a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Pittsburgh. For 10 years he taught at the University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown Campus and for 28-1/2 years, he taught at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the English department. While at IUP, Mr. Swigart served as assistant chairperson and chairperson of the English department. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Mr. Swigart enjoyed reading and traveling and treasured the time he spent fly-fishing along the banks of Kettle Creek. He was a kind, generous, optimistic man, and never without a smile.
He is survived by a daughter and two sons: Dana Kaye Hamilton, of Indiana; Steven Wayne Swigart, of Athens, TX; and Kirk Harris Swigart and wife Jill, of Bear, DE; four grandchildren: Jeffrey, Tanya, Richard and Kristen; a brother, Richard Swigart, of New Philadelphia, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Kathryn “Kaye” Loutsenhizer Swigart.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Robinson-Lytle, Inc. Additional visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Golden officiating. A private family interment will follow.
