Jung Ho Kang has been released from Aguilas Cibaenas, his team in the Dominican Winter League, according to a report by Yonhap News Agency.
Kang batted just .143 in 24 games with Aguilas Cibaenas. He hit one home run, drove in 10 runs, led the team with 31 strikeouts, and made four errors at third base.
Kang sat out the entire 2017 Major League season after a third drunk driving conviction in South Korea prevented him from getting a U.S. work visa. The winter ball season would have helped Kang prepare for his potential return to the Pirates.
The Pirates have not made a public decision on Kang’s future with the team, but the organization is exploring infield options available this winter via trades and free agency.
