Sunday’s Sports Roundup includes the District 6 semifinals and the Class AA championship, IUP’s doubleheader wins over Lock Haven, and the Penguins’ loss to Chicago.
In the District 6 semifinals Saturday, the Homer Center Wildcats shut out Ferndale, 18-0, highlighted by an 82-yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive back Cobe Daugherty. The Wildcats will play for the Class A championship against Bishop Guilfoyle on Friday night at Mansion Park in Altoona.
Ligonier Valley won the Class AA championship Saturday night with a 19-12 win over Bishop McCort.
In college basketball, the IUP women and men swept a doubleheader from Lock Haven. The women won 78-53 and the men won 90-83.
The IUP football team will get a rematch with West Chester Saturday, November 25 in the NCAA Division Two Super Region One football playoffs. The Crimson Hawks had a bye this past Saturday while West Chester beat Shippensburg, 27-6. IUP beat West Chester, 24-7 last week in the PSAC championship game.
In the pros, the Penguins lost to the Chicago Blackhawks, 2-1. The score was 1-0 heading into the third before Matt Hunwick would tie the game with the Pens’ only goal, in his first game since October 14th. Not 30 seconds passed on the clock before Chicago answered with a goal by Artem Anisimov. The score would have been tied once more, but a would-be goal by Jake Guentzel was denied due to goalie interference by Olli Maata, and the score remained 2-1.
