The Indiana School Board has approved some action concerning the Summit Platform that is currently in use at the Junior High School.
The Summit Platform has come under scrutiny since its implementation at the sixth grade level at the start of the school year, with many parents attending the meetings saying the method of teaching is not right for their kids, and that the kids are getting too much screen time and not enough time with teachers. On top of approving a motion to direct the administration to seek out the costs of a third-party entity to survey those directly involved in implementing the Summit Platform, the board also approved a motion to find ways to have additional communication with parents and identify immediate issues to fix. Board member Walter Schroth said that these motions would give a sense of immediacy to the issue.
The board also approved a motion to direct the administration to prepare a comprehensive explanation of the Summit method.
In other business, the board:
- Approved refinancing portions of the 2012 and 2013 general obligation bonds. This will save the district $197,631.
- Ordered the administration to post for an additional kindergarten teacher for Ben Franklin School
- Congratulated four outgoing board members for their service: William Smith, Deborah Clawson, John Uccellini, and Diana Paccapaniccia
