The IUP women’s basketball team defeated West Virginia State, 72-47, Sunday afternoon at the KCAC on the second day of the S&T Bank PSAC-MEC Conference Challenge.
Two players came off the bench to lead the Crimson Hawks. Sophomore forward Maura D’Anna scored a game-high 16 points and senior Audrey Stapleton scored 13 points.
Shooting percentages weren’t very high, as West Virginia State shot just 15 of 69 (.217) from the field and IUP converted just 26 of 80 shots (.325).
All the missed shots – a total of 121, including free throw missess – provided plenty of rebounding opportunities for both teams, and IUP won that battle, 64 to 49. Junior forward Brittany Robinson came down with a career-high 15 boards. In addition to D’Anna, senior guard Halle Denman also pulled in nine rebounds. There were eight dead ball rebounds.
IUP improved to 2-0.
