From IUP Sports Information
IUP senior defensive tackle Jemal Averette is one of 46 players who have been nominated for the 2017 Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year award, presented by the Manheim Touchdown Club.
The award has been presented annually since 2004 to the most outstanding offensive or defensive lineman in Division II.
Averette is a two-time All-Super Region One selection as an interior lineman, earning third team nods in both 2015 and after an injury-shortened 2016 season. He’s also a two-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division pick.
The co-captain helped the Crimson Hawks to the 2017 PSAC Championship with a 24-7 win over West Chester on Saturday. Averette helped the IUP defense limit West Chester just 30 yards rushing, as the Golden Rams’ 197 total yards were their lowest output since 2011.
Averette’s 38 total tackles this year is currently eighth on the team and second among defensive lineman. He has 7.0 tackles-for-loss and 3.0 sacks, one forced fumble, and has made an impact on special teams with two blocked kicks.
The IUP defense is one of the best in the country, ranking in the top 25 in seven statistical categories.
He was dominant in the Crimson Hawks’ 26-10 rivalry win over California (Pa.), totaling seven tackles, including 3.0 tackles-for-loss as the Vulcans managed just 51 rushing yards.
