Robert R. Klar, 93, of Indiana, passed away Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, at St. Andrew’s Village.
A son of Paul and Hazel Otte Klar, he was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Mount Clemens, MI.
Mr. Klar was a graduate of Falls Creek High School, Penn State (DuBois) and the University of Pittsburgh, graduating with high honors and a bachelor of arts degree in pre-education. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a member of the 148th Combat Engineers for 33 months in France, Belgium and Germany. One of his proudest accomplishments was his role in the building of a bridge over the Rhine River in Remagen, Germany. The bridge allowed the United States to gain access to Germany and ultimately shorten World War II. Mr. Klar was a retired sales representative for Chevron Oil. He had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church since he started attending in 1952. At Grace United Methodist Church, Mr. Klar was an usher, a Sunday school teacher and an active member of the Come Double Group. He was also a long-time member of the Indiana Rotary Club, and along with his wife, Beth Ann, were members of the Indiana Ballroom Dancing Club. Mr. Klar was also an avid golfer and ice skater.
He is survived by a half-brother, Frank W. Hughes, of Ridgway; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Klar, of Falls Creek; a niece, Rebecca Klar and nephew, Robin Klar.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beth Ann Moore Klar in 2015. He was a loving father to John Frederick Klar, whom the Klars adopted as an infant; two brothers: Raymond Klar and Paul George Klar; and a sister, Patricia Louise Reynolds.
Friends will be received one hour prior to the funeral service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with Pastor Kathy Mihoerck officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery.
Military honors will be provided by Indiana V.F.W. Post 1989.
