Former state Treasurer Barbara Hafer was sentenced yesterday to three years probation, a fine of $50,000, and 500 hours of community service for her guilty plea to lying to FBI agents about $675,000 given to her by a man who did business with the state during her time in office.
A tearful Hafer told U.S. District Judge John Jones that she was sorry, ashamed, and heartsick that she had taken money from investment advisor Richard Ireland. The FBI began investigating her when her name came up in the criminal case against another former state Treasurer, Rob McCord, who resigned in 2015 and is awaiting sentencing on extortion charges.
Hafer is 74 years old and lives in Indiana. Ireland gave her the money to help her start a consulting firm after her time in office. Judge Jones said he considered her actions to be a “fit of bad judgment” committed because she feared revealing her relationship with Ireland “at the worst was illegal and at best was unseemly.”
