The State Senate has approved legislation that would extend the life of the Childrens Health Insurance Program, better known as CHIP.
House bill 1388 will extend the CHIP program to 2019, but the senate package included an amendment to prohibit the use of CHIP money for sex-change operations for children. That amendment was proposed by Senator White, who called it “irresponsible” to use CHIP resources for sex-change procedures. He also said that the amendment would bring CHIP in line with state regulations that prohibit Medicaid funding for the same operations.
The bill heads back to the state house so they can approve the amendments.
