Despite the fact that IUP lost two fumbles, had a bad snap on an extra point, missed a field goal, and one interception, the defense led the way and they came away with a 23-17 win over the upstart Clarion University team.
Clarion scored first when IUP’s Lenny Williams fumbled. IUP came back and scored on a Williams’ pass to Rex Pearce to make it 7-6, where it would stay following a bad snap.
Samir Bullock then scored for IUP. The Hawks would score a third time on an 80 yard drive, making it 20-7 with a 4 yard run by Justice Evans. After a field goal by Dillon Sarka made it 23-7 in the 2nd period with 3:12 to go, things turned around and Clarion pretty much controlled the rest of the game. Clarion would later make it 23-17 on a field goal with 3:40 to go, but IUP’s defense stepped up, sacking QB Jeff Clemens three times.
Lenny Williams threw 13 of 25, 198 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
The Crimson Hawks came away with a win thanks to the defense and still have not allowed a point in the 4th quarter. IUP remains undefeated.
