The man charged with the brutal murder of a University of Pittsburgh Student last weekend and the rape of an IUP student in Indiana County was apprehended earlier this morning in South Carolina.
21-year-old Matthew Darby was apprehended in Myrtle Beach early this morning. Darby is charged with the beating and stabbing death of his former girlfriend, Alin Sheykhet, early Sunday at her apartment in Oakland.
In a statement on the Myrtle Beach Police Department Facebook Page, Public Information Officer Captain Joey Crosby said a concerned citizen’s call lead to Darby’s arrest. The citizen saw Darby trying to open the window of a Myrtle Beach residence and called police. When police investigated further, they found out that Darby was wanted on the murder charge.
Darby also faces charges of rape, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault for the alleged rape of a woman in Indiana last February. She was an IUP Student who was also an ex-girlfriend of Darby’s. She said she told him she was seeing another man, and he then raped her. He was free on $10,000 but that was revoked. He failed to show up for a pre-trial proceeding scheduled for yesterday.
While extradition proceedings are underway, there’s no word on when Darby will be brought back to Pennsylvania.
