Doyle Rowley, Jr., age 89, of Lewisburg, formerly of Indiana, died peacefully on Friday, September 29, 2017 with family by his side.
Doyle was born on February 18, 1928 in Indiana to the late Dollie Blose Rowley and Doyle Rowly, Sr. During his childhood years he was active in his church youth group, and enjoyed his childhood on South 13th St. and was a very dedicated Boy Scout earning the of Eagle Scout in 1942. Doyle enjoyed singing with many choirs during high school and was in the order of Demolay going through the chairs becoming Master Counselor. He attended “The Laboratory Training School” on the campus of then Indiana State Teachers College. He graduated from Indiana Senior High School in 1947.
Doyle proudly served his country as a United States Marine for four years which included a tour of duty in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant and was always faithful to the Corp and like all good Marines, considered himself a Marine his entire life. After being discharged, Doyle owned and operated Rowley’s Greenhouse and Floral Shop located at 1019 Water St. in Indiana for a period of 30 years. He then became co-owner of D&B Lawn Service whichoperated for 9 years until Doyle’s official retirement. Doyle’s love of horticulture served him well both in business and relaxation.
Doyle was baptized in the First Presbyterian Church of Indiana, now Calvary Presbyterian Church and was a member since 1952. He served as an Elder and on many church committees.
On October 18, 1952 Doyle married Joanne Lee Mauchline of Ambridge, and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather until his death.
Doyle devoted considerable time and effort to the Boy Scouts of America both locally in Indiana as well as in the Southwestern Pennsylvania area at the District and Council levels for 64 years. He served multiple times as an Assistant Scoutmaster and Scout Master of Troop 29 charter by Calvary Presbyterian Church. He held other positions including District Commissioner, District Chairman, Council Vice President and member of the Council Advisory Board. In addition to being an Eagle Scout Doyle was honored in 1970 as a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He attended two national Jamborees, one in 1969 in Idaho and in 1973 at Moraine State Park near Butler. In 1979 he was a Crew Advisor to local scouts attending the national adventure Scout Ranch Philmont, in Cimarron New Mexico.
Doyle’s devotion to community service extended to the time he spent as an active member of the lion’s Club in Indiana. In his free time, Doyle enjoyed woodworking, camping, hunting, neighborhood horseshoes and backyard picnics.
Doyle is survived by his wife Joanne of 64 years and two children: Robin Miller and husband Dan of Lewisburg and Rob Rowley and his wife Karen of New Cumberland as well as three grandsons Brian Cotti and Andrew and Alexander Rowley.
He was preceded in death by two brothers LeRoy and Walter and two sisters Betty and Barbara Jean.
Friends will be received on Monday October 2nd at Calvary Presbyterian Church located at 695 South 7th St. in Indiana beginning at 10 AM with a funeral service to begin at 11 AM with Rev. David Hanna officiating. Following the service family again will receive friends at the church. A private interment for the family will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contribution may be made to Calvary Presbyterian Church Property Committee or to the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 29 Indiana c/o Calvary Presbyterian Church.
