State Police in Kittanning are investigating cases of debit and credit card information theft that happened at gas stations in Armstrong County.
Police say at various times this month, thieves were able use skimmer devices at gas stations to get debit and credit card information, then used that information to make unauthorized purchases. There’s no word yet on how many people were affected by these information thefts, or at what gas stations the skimming devices were found.
Skimmers are devices that can fit over credit card readers that can read the information off of a card as you swipe it through, and save it so that the scammer can use that information to make unauthorized purchases. County residents are asked to check their credit and debit card statements for fraudulent activity and report it immediately to their local police or to the State Police in Kittanning at 724-543-2011.
