Students at five Indiana County high schools will benefit from a grant that IUP has received from the U.S. Department of Education. The $262,577 in funding for the Upward Bound Math & Science program could grow to $1.31 million over the next five years.
Upward Bound will provide math, science, and technology learning support, academic advising, tutoring, and financial aid assistance to 52 economically disadvantaged and first-generation students. It’s designed to encourage them to pursue post-secondary education programs that lead to careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines.
Since Upward Bound was first funded in 2007, 191 students have participated in the program and 109 have completed it. Thirty are now college graduates and 78 are currently in college. There are 42 students in the program right now.
