A new extension of the Ghost Town Trail opened this week in Cambria County, part of a plan to make the trail the first looped rail-to-trail in the eastern United States.
The new section covers 8.1 miles from the end of the Rexis Branch at White Mill Crossing, past the Belsano Crossing, to North Street in the town of Cardiff. It includes two new bridges. The project was paid for using a PennDOT Transportation Alternatives Program grant, with additional funding from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. Construction began last spring.
The newly-opened section of the Ghost Town Trail follows the path of old C&I Railroad tracks. It’s one phase of a multiphase project that will complete the loop on the Ghost Town Trail, completely via the use of old railroad corridors.
The Indiana County section of the Ghost Town Trail connects to the Hoodlebug Trail in the Josephine area.
