The issues of air quality testing and school start times will be brought up for discussion at tonight’s Indiana School Board meeting.
The board is expected to approve motions concerning air quality tests for asbestos and mold at all the buildings in the district. The cost of the asbestos testing will come to a total of $2250 for all six buildings, and the mold testing will come to a total of $3990 for all six buildings. The issue of air quality testing came up after reports of mold at the Ben Franklin Elementary School, which has since been cleared up.
The other issue is one that is being recommended for further discussion by the Academic Committee, and that is the issue of school start times. There are several groups that are saying that schools are starting too early in the morning to allow students to get much-needed sleep. The early wake-up calls force kids to either walk to the bus stop or walk or drive to school in pre-dawn hours, and some studies say that the early start times are actually detrimental to the health of the students.
Tonight’s meeting starts at 7:30 at the East Pike complex.
