It’s the end of an era for one of the four anchor stores at the Indiana Mall.
Sunday is the last day of operation for the Indiana KMart store. Going-out-of-business sales have been going on over the last few months with fixtures starting to be sold within the last month or so.
Sherry Renosky of the Indiana Mall said that the store has had a long legacy, with several employees sticking around to the very end.
“You know, that’s an original store from 1979 when the mall opened, it’s been there the entire time. Eight of their employees opened that store. What a great family there, having eight of their employees that stayed with Kmart since ’79. I know customers are sad, we’re sad.”
Many inquiries have come in from charitable groups about using the space, but Renosky said she can’t have charitable groups go in there.
“Kmart’s lease is not up until 2019, so I do not have access to the room. And yes, we’ve had groups asking to have some events in there and, you know, with them still having the property– we can’t at this time.”
There’s no official word on what could take KMart’s place at the mall. The store is open 10 AM to 7 PM Sunday.
