We’re coming to the unofficial end of summer, and much like Memorial Day, Labor Day is expecting to be another holiday where people will take to the roads for a vacation. PennDOT and State Police are asking people to stay safe on the roads.
In a news release, PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards said that while DUI-related deaths have fallen in recent times, drug-related crashes have gone up in number. Last year, the State Police say they investigated over 2800 crashes in Pennsylvania, with 281 of them alcohol-related that resulted in 13 fatalities. 106 of the crashes were drug-related, and out of those drug-related crashes, two fatalities were reported.
State Police and many DUI task forces will step up enforcement efforts over the Labor Day weekend. Authorities are also advising everyone to not drink and drive, and if you drink, designate a driver. They encourage people to use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “SaferRide” smartphone app for Android and Apple devices to find a designated driver.
