Larry E. Buterbaugh, 66, of Indiana, went home to the Lord on Monday, July 31, 2017, while vacationing with friends in Surf City, NC.
The son of the late I. Glenn and Vera L. Shaffer Buterbaugh, he was born July 16, 1951, in Indiana.
Larry was a graduate of Indiana Area High School and attended both Penn State and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was employed by National Mine Service Company prior to being employed by Pennsylvania American Water Company, where he worked from 1976 to his retirement in 2006. God, family and friends were everything to Larry. A friend commented that “for having no children, Larry and Carol were the most celebrated parents” that she had ever met. He was the rock these relationships were built on. Larry lived his faith through his volunteer work, locally, nationally and internationally. In January, he planned to make his sixth mission trip to Haiti. While he was active in many organizations, his church, Trinity United Methodist, had become the foundation of his giving back. He taught and mentored youth, worked and planned mission trips, built ramps, worked the food pantry, held committee positions and more. The church provided him the opportunity to extend his humanitarianism into the community through programs like Circles and Family Promise, programs that gave him more family to nurture. He was a strong advocate of the government of White Township and served many years on committees to improve the community that he called home.
He leaves behind his wife and best friend of 44 years, Carol Rising Buterbaugh. Also surviving are his sister, Linda Buterbaugh Droluk (Michael), of Warminster; brothers and sisters in law: Mary Rising Isenberg (Ronald), Patricia Rising, John Rising (Jennifer Kunkle), Edward Rising (Rene Arotin), all of Indiana; Catherine Rising Kimmel, of Home; Joseph Rising (Sarah Anthony), of Rochester Mills; Linda Rising Stephens (Gary), of Huntertown, IN; Janet Rising Lippert (Russell), of Marion Center and Joanne Rising Ruffner (Gerald), of Homer City. In addition, he leaves behind many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews; his godsons who were with him on vacation, Daniel Orrison (Kelly), of Pittsburgh and Benjamin Orrison (Cassie), of Carnegie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Robert and Jean Rising; a brother-in-law, Randy Kimmel; a nephew, Andy Isenberg and great nieces, Faith and Hope Sabo.
Friends are invited to gather for a celebration of his life on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017 at Trinity United Methodist Church for visitation from 3 to 5 p.m., with a service to follow at 5 p.m., with friend and Pastor Gregory Golden officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Larry’s request would be contributions to be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 398 Church Street, Indiana, PA 15701, for continued work in Haiti.
In addition, Carol has asked for those attending to please bring their memory of Larry in written form to be placed in a memory basket for her to enjoy later, enabling her to keep that treasure long after you all have gone home. You may also mail them to Carol’s attention at the Trinity Church address.
