At last night’s Indiana School Board meeting, the issue of defeasment came up as the Audit and Finance Committee gave their recommendation for the bond issue for the proposed Ben Franklin project.
Julia Trimarchi-Cuccaro of the school board’s audit and finance committee said that it was the opinion of the committee to not go through with defeasing the bond issue, which would void the bond by essentially paying the bond back now. She said that while there would be a savings in the short term, over the long term, everything would even out. The money, she feels, should be kept and used for projects at the Ben Franklin School.
In other business, the board approved conducting air quality testing for mold and asbestos at the Ben Franklin Elementary School. Recent complaints of mold affecting three or four classrooms prompted this action. A study for the remainder of the schools in the district is set to appear on the agenda at the next school board meeting on September 11th.
Finally, the board will hold an outreach committee meeting on September 20th at 6:00 PM in the district boardroom, with the topics including school building configuration options, home and school communication and the new school year experience.
