The Detroit Tigers blasted the Pirates, 10-0, last night.
Justin Verlander flirted with his third career no-hitter, firing eight innings of one-hit, shutout ball to secure the win. Josh Bell broke up the no-no with a double in the sixth. Bell finished with two of the Pirates’ three hits.
The Pirates and Tigers wrap up their four-game home-and-home series this afternoon in Detroit. It’s a 12:45 airtime, first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1160 WCCS and 101.1 FM. Gerrit Cole pitches for the Bucs against Drew VerHagen. Cole is 9-and-8 with a 4.00 ERA, but 6-2 with a 2.98 ERA in his last ten starts. The Pirates have won eight of those 10 games.
The Cubs and Brewers both lost and the Cardinals won, so the Pirates are still 3-and-a-half games behind Chicago in the NL Central. The Cards and Brewers are a game-and-a-half back.
