The State System of Higher Education announced an interim chancellor to take over for retiring Chancellor Frank Brogan.
Karen Whitney, the outgoing president of Clarion University, has been tapped to be the interim chancellor as the search goes on for a new permanent chancellor. In a media release from the State System, Whitney will come at a time when the Board of Governors will start to develop an implementation plan as part of the next phase of the strategic review of the state system. Board of Governors Chairperson Cynthia D. Shapira said that because she understands the challenges and opportunities ahead of the State System, she will be able to hit the ground running and lead the system into the foreseeable future.
Whitney’s experience with the State System goes beyond her time as Clarion University’s president, as she was also on the President’s Council for the State System for three years, and was the longest-serving president within the State System. She was to retire from Clarion in June of 2018, but will step down in September to start as the interim chancellor. She officially begins on September 12th.
