The 2017 PA Youth American Legion State Tournament at First Commonwealth Bank Field in Center Township concluded on Wednesday.
Day 5
The Spring City Red Sox from Royersford near Philadelphia have won the PA Youth American Legion State Title in two of the past three years and both have been won at First Commonwealth Bank Field in Homer City.
Spring City scored a run in the first and four in the second to seize control early on their way to a 7-2 victory over Plymouth Whitemarsh.
In its four wins, the Red Sox allowed just 2 runs.
Warren finished third after losing to PW 11-2 in the semifinals.
Day 4
In what was one of the most entertaining games of the Western Regional & Youth Legion State Championship Tournament, Warren defeated North Parkland from the Allentown area 7-5 in 8 innings.
In a game that went back and forth, it appeared as if North Parkland would win it in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 7th.
Trailing 5-3 entering their last at-bats, North Parkland plated two runs to tie the game at 5, and had runners at 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Warren got out of it with an infield pop out, a comebacker to the mound, and a pop fly in foul territory to the first baseman and then plated two runs on a long double off of the bat of Micah Passmore in the top half of the 8th, and held off North Parkland in the bottom of the inning to advance to Championship Wednesday.
In the nightcap, Plymouth Whitemarsh scored six runs in first inning, the first runs allowed by Spring City, and went on to hand the Red Sox their first loss, 10-2.
Day 3
Plymouth Whitemarsh scored 10 runs in their last three at bats erasing an 8-4 deficit. They scored four runs in the top of the seventh, breaking an 8-8 tied to defeat Armstrong, the Indiana County league champs, by final score of 12-8.
In the winners bracket final, Spring City amazingly completed their third straight shutout, this one by pitcher Zach Male, who threw just 78 pitches to defeat North Parkland, 3-0. Spring City has scored only six runs in the tournament, but they are 3-0, thanks to a 1-0 win, a 2-0 win, and now a 3-0 victory. Male allowed just four hits and needed just 76 pitches in authoring SC’s win as they stretched their shutout string to 21 straight innings.
