With Pennsylvania lawmakers struggling to find a way to pay for the new $32 billion budget, every tax dollar counts. State officials have finished a preliminary count of the 2017 PA Tax Amnesty Program, which they say collected $114.5 million in delinquent taxes between April 21st and June 19th. That’s $14.5 million more than previous estimates.
At the start of the program, the Revenue Department said that 862,598 people and businesses owed about $3.47 billion in delinquent taxes were owed to the state. 3,019 Indiana County taxpayers owed back taxes. The announcement yesterday does not include a county-by-county breakdown of the number of people who paid or how much was collected.
All of the tax penalties and half of the interest were waived for those who paid up by June 19th. For those who did not, they still owe the taxes and penalties, and an additional five percent will be added to their debt.
