In Shelocta yesterday, state Attorney General Josh Shapiro and Indiana County District Attorney Patrick Dougherty announced a new program that will distribute 300,000 drug deactivation and disposal pouches in twelve counties besieged by the opioid epidemic.
At Klingensmith’s Drug Store along Route 422, Shapiro said the eighty percent of heroin addicts get started on drugs they get from “friends, relatives, or a medicine cabinet.”
The pouches, which are for Schedule II narcotics such as fentanyl, oxycodone, and other prescription painkillers, will be available at 278 pharmacies in Indiana, Cambria, Blair, Butler, Erie, Fayette, Lackawanna, Lawrence, Lehigh, Luzerne, Mercer, and Montour counties. They hold up to 45 pills and when you add warm water to them and seal them, they deactivate the drugs. The pouches can then be disposed of in the trash.
The Deterra Drug Pouch is available to anyone who requests one. There is a website that lists the pharmacies that will have them. Visit www.attorneygeneral.gov/Drug_Deactivation.
