State Police from the Indiana Barracks reported on Friday that a counterfeit $100 bill was passed at the White Township Eat ‘n’ Park last week. New details about the money itself has come out, along with tips on how to tell if it’s real or fake.
The fake $100 bill had the words “For Motion Picture Use Only” on them. The movie-quality currency can be purchased via apps or on the internet, and from a distance or on the screen, they may look very much like the real thing. There are ways you can determine what a genuine $100 bill looks like. First, check for a watermark on the right side of the bill as you hold the bill looking at Ben Franklin by holding it up to the light. There’s also color shifting ink on the bill on the lower portion that changes from copper to green as the bill is tilted 45 degrees. The federal reserve has released more information on telling whether a bill is counterfeit or not on their website https://www.secretservice.gov/data/KnowYourMoney.pdf
State Police say that depending on the circumstances, passing counterfeit money could bring charges of theft by deception, theft of services, receiving stolen property, and/or forgery. If you come across a counterfeit bill, contact the police.
