State Police have released the statistics for crashes over the Independence Day driving period and statistics were on the rise.
This year, over a four-day driving period, State Police reported that troopers investigated 741 total crashes across the state, including 13 fatal crashes that killed 13 people. In all the crashes, 259 people were injured. 75 of the crashes reported were alcohol-related, and four of the fatal crashes were alcohol-related.
Comparing that to last year’s three-day driving period, the statistics show a major spike across the board. In 2016, state police investigated 423 total crashes, with 3 fatal crashes that killed 3 people, 165 people injured, 52 alcohol-related crashes and 1 alcohol-related fatality.
As far as enforcement efforts went, State Police reported 474 DUI arrests were made, 11,481 speeding citations were issued, 764 seat belt citations issued, and 216 tickets for child safety seat violations were reported.
When the statistics were broken down by troop, Troop A, which covers Indiana County had 46 crashes investigated, including seven alcohol-related crashes. There were no fatalities in the Troop A area and 16 people were injured.
