It was a close game, but the Pirates pulled off the victory, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Friday in St. Louis.
The Pirates took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd thanks to a solo home run from Josh Bell to right field, but the Cards responded with a two-run homer to left field from Jose Martinez. The Pirates would tie as Andrew McCutchen hit and RBI ground out to second baseman Paul Dejong. The hit scored David Freese. In the bottom of the 7th, Dejong would hit a homer of his own to deep center field, and that gave St. Louis a 3-2 lead, but the Pirates got the tying run in the top of the 8th as Freese hit a single to right field to score Adam Frazier. John Jaso gave the Pirates the win in the top of the 9th with a solo homer to center field.
Jameson Taillon got a no-decision, going 6 innings allowing one homer as part of the two runs scored on four hits, but he struck out seven and issued two walks. Felipe Rivero got credit for the win, his 3rd of the season so far.
The Pirates and Cardinals play tonight starting at 6:50 on WCCS.
