For the second straight day, Indiana County citizens kept an eye to the weather forecasts and to nearby creeks and streams as a second day of harsh weather hit the area.
After receiving over 3 inches of rain Thursday night, another two inches of rain were expected Friday and going into early Saturday from the remnants of a tropical storm that came through the area. Creeks once again started to rise, and there were several pumping details called out, but not as many as Thursday night. According to Indiana County 911, the pumping details were in the areas of Brush Valley, Blacklick, Shelocta, Center Township, and Young Township, and ran from roughly 4 PM to 8 PM. Indiana County 911 also reported several incidents of trees and wires down due to weather conditions from about 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Friday in White Township, East Wheatfield Township and Creekside borough. Because of the rain, activities at last night’s Indiana County Fireman’s convention was cancelled, but activities for today will go on as scheduled.
Some good news came late in the day, as one of Indiana’s main roadways, Route 422 between Route 56 and Five Points Road reopened around 5:00 PM. The road was closed due to flood-related issues.
The American Red Cross has dispatched volunteers to assist with the flooding not just in Indiana County, but in several surrounding areas. The Red Cross said that in Indiana County, Disaster Assessment Teams assisted Indiana County’s Emergency Management and provided about 30 clean-up kits to families. Red Cross volunteers will be back tomorrow to continue. Anyone who might need assistance from the Red Cross are encouraged to call 724-465-5678 and choose option 1.
