Indiana County Coroner Jerry Overman Jr. has identified the Armstrong Township drowning victim who was killed during yesterday’s storms as 30-year-old Justin David McCoy of 1623 Sportsman Club Road in Shelocta.
Overman says the victim and his father were attempting to clear debris from a fifteen-inch overflow pipe in a pond when McCoy’s kayak flipped over and his legs were sucked into the pipe, trapping him. As the pond level continued to rise, McCoy’s father and neighbors were unable to free him.
The first call to 911 came at 5:34 PM. Five fire companies were summoned to the scene, but McCoy could not be saved. Overman pronounced him dead at the scene at 7:39 PM.
