The 117th U.S. Open tees off today at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, and Martin Kaymer, the past three champions of the event, are grouped together for the first two rounds.
Other notable groups include Jason Day, Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy, and Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott and Bubba Watson. The action gets started at 7:45 AM with “the pro’s pro”, former Oakmont pro Bob Ford as the Honorary Starter.
Phil Mickelson has never won a U.S. Open and he apparently won’t this year. Mickelson’s daughter, Amanda, is scheduled to graduate from high school today and Lefty says he will be there. He has not officially withdrawn. His team time is 2:20 and if he is not on the tee then, he is penalized two strokes. After five minutes he would be disqualified and his replacement would be alternate Roberto Diaz. Mickelson is hoping weather delays the start and he can make it after the graduation ceremony.
