The Colorado Rockies avoided a three-game sweep with a 5-1 win over the Pirates last night.
Chad Kuhl allowed three runs in five frames to fall to 1-and-6. Pittsburgh’s only run scored on a double play in the sixth. The Bucs had won four straight.
The Pirates activated catcher Francisco Cervelli from the seven-day concussion disabled list yesterday and he was involved in a bench-clearing incident. Cervelii was hit by a pitch in the 5th inning and as he started toward first base he got into an argument with Rockies’ catcher Tony Wolters. No punches were thrown and order was restored after the benches emptied. Cervelli was asked what Wolters said to him and said it was between him and Wolters, but he didn’t like it.
The Pirates are off today. They will open up a three-game series with the Cubs tomorrow night at PNC Park. Trevor Williams pitches for the Bucs against Chicago’s Eddie Butler.
In other Pirates news, on the final day of the Major League Baseball draft, the Pirates had 30 picks and used fourteen of them on pitchers. Thirteen of them were right-handers. Their final pick was infielder Tyler Osik, the son of former Pirates’ catcher Keith Osik.
