Wallace H. Newquist, age 93 of Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.
He was born in 1924 in Ridgway to Swan and Jennie Newquist. A veteran of WW II, he served with the 2nd Marine Divison, 8th Regiment and Special Weapons. He served in the Battle of Okinawa and the Occupation of Japan landing at Nagasaki.
After the war, he attended Pittsburgh Diesel School and received
his certification. He enrolled at California University of PA and while in school, he was a member of the Epsilon Pi Tau Fraternity and served as its treasurer. After receiving his degree, he taught mathematics and industrial arts for the Butler Area School District. While in Butler, he received his Master’s Degree from Westminster College. Also while in Butler, he served as president of the Butler Chapter of SPEBSQSA, Inc., and sang in three Barber Shop Quartets.
He was also a member of the Kiwanis, one of the founders of Center Township Little League, and served as a Cub Master and Scout Master. After relocating to Indiana, he was employed at McCreary Industrial Products as a sales representative and then with Samuel Bingham Co. in Pittsburgh. While in Indiana, he
served as president of Kiwanis and AARP.
He was also a life member of the VFW Post 1989, the American Legion, and a 50-yr member of the F&A Masons Lodge #313.
He enjoyed playing golf, poker, Bridge, reading, and doing
crossword puzzles.
Wallace is survived by two sons – Del and wife Mary, Penfield, NY; and Mark, Indiana; four grandchildren – Katharine Snyder and husband David, Lewes, DE; Matthew Newquist, New Castle, DE; Luke Newquist and wife Whitney, Lewisburg; and Zachary Newquist, Pittsburgh; one great grandson – Bryce Newquist; many nieces and nephews; and his best friend Jane Ferguson, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth L. Newquist, four sisters – Bertha Smith, Margaret Tongren, Edith Corbe, Jane Newquist, and three brothers – Bertel, Gerald, and Herbert Newquist.
Friends will be received on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 A.M. with Pastor Kathy Mihoerck officiating.
Interment will be made in the Morningside Cemetery, Dubois. Military honors will be provided by the US Marine Corp and the VFW Post #1989.
