This weekend is one of the most traveled weekends of the year, and reports are saying that a lot of people will be headed out for the Memorial Day weekend.
AAA is predicting that this year’s Memorial Day travel period, which starts today and ends on Monday, may be one of the more traveled weekends in several years. They are anticipating over 39 million people will travel 50 miles or more for the holiday weekend. That’s more than a million travelers than last year, and the highest number of travelers since Memorial Day of 2005. And despite the fact that gasoline prices across the country are at their highest mark since 2015, AAA is predicting a 2.4% growth in the number of people who are driving to their destination.
Gas prices in the region remain on the high side. The statewide average price of a gallon of gasoline according to Gasbuddy.com is $2.58 a gallon. In Indiana County, many of the gas stations are close to that state average, checking in with the price $2.59 a gallon. The cheapest gas is in Homer City at Townshend Gas and Oil at $2.54 a gallon, and two gas stations in Armagh check in at $2.57 a gallon. Gas prices along Route 22 near Blairsville are a bit more expensive at $2.65 a gallon.
