PennDOT says the new Route 553 Alverda Road Bridge is open, with only one more item to check off before the replacement project is complete. The bridge opened yesterday. The old structurally deficient bridge was replaced as part of the state’s Rapid Bridge Replacement Program. The project began last year and the flow of traffic has been controlled by a temporary signal.
PennDOT advises drivers that there will be a slight bump when you’re crossing the bridge until the contractor adds a polyester polymer concrete overlay, which will reduce wear and tear from harsh winter weather and reduce the long-term maintenance costs. The PPC overlay can only be applied when the concrete has cured for thirty days, the weather is dry, and temperatures have been consistently over forty degrees. They’re hoping to get it done in early June.
