The issue of school security was brought up at last night’s Indiana School Board meeting.
The issue has become a hot topic since Senator Don White introduced a bill that would give school districts the option to arm their teachers. A group of concerned citizens has voiced their opposition to that measure, saying that while it may be beneficial for some rural school districts, it would not be beneficial for Indiana School District.
This was a sentiment shared by Board President Doug Steve, who said that he was not in favor of arming teachers, saying it was the district’s responsibility to have qualified armed personnel to protect the students.
To that end, on the agenda at last night’s meeting was a motion to add armed security to the Junior High School, and a request to seek proposals for two armed guards that would work the district’s four elementary schools. The board felt that the motion should be discussed further and voted 8-1 to table it, with Steve casting the lone dissenting vote. The motion will now go to the Buildings and Grounds committee and the Academic committee for review.
